Doctors doing Meditation

Have a look at this article in the New York Times yesterday. Interesting… about the benefits of physicians doing meditation.

Family Life…

We now have two children, a toddler and an infant.  I have been reading recently about how women manage career and home.  For instance this article really confronts the issue by asking Should Woman even be Doctors…   http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/13/should-women-be-doctors/?hpw  My take on this is… that sure woman can be doctors.  They can even have a family at the same time.  Of course most woman who have kids and want to keep going in their career will need some help with childcare.  And there may be some specialties that are so demanding that it is hard to keep up with skills if working only 20 hours or so a week.  However, I think with many types of practice this is not an issue.  And docs call “part-time” a job with “only” 40 hours a week.  I believe that many people, men and woman, could stand for a family/work balance that was limited to 40 hours/week.  Certainly their children (if they have them) would likely benefit.

This would mean however that there needs to be more docs to cover the rest of the time… I don’t think this is necessarily a bad idea.  There are plenty of good solid American students who want to be docs.  The medical school just need to accept and graduate more of these citizens.  That is, of course, easier said then done.  Which is then another topic.

25 Things to do with your 10 month old around the house.

  1. Read a Library Book – Look for board books… Colorful ones with big pictures and not very many words.  Point out interesting objects.  Ask him to turn the page and help.  Books with lots of interesting sound words are often popular.  Also ones with touch and feel parts.
  2. Turn up the radio and dance a little tune with him.  See what kind of music makes him smile.  Rock, country, jazz…?  Do a spin, a dip, cha-cha-cha.  See if he picks up and and rocks with the beat.
  3. Hold his hands and let him walk around the house.  Explore different areas… you’ll notice new things just because he does.
  4. Take a bath… play with boats, sink the ship.  Splash the water… blow bubbles and let him catch them.  Practice kicking in water:  “swim, swim, swim.”
  5. Go on a walk outside.  Dress for the weather and go with a baby carrier or stroller.  Each have their benefits.  Point out things that are interesting, name and talk about them.
  6. Put him next to the couch, standing so he can cruise along the edge.  Put some toys there in his reach.
  7. Buy a little riding toy… help him learn to drive forward and back.  Careful supervision to make sure he doesn’t go too far or into things he shouldn’t, or fall off.
  8. Let him play with the pots and pans in the kitchen.  Bring out some Tupperware containers for him to put objects in and take them out again.
  9. Build block castles… Let him knock them down.  Teach him how to put one block on another building a “tower” of two.
  10. Set him up in his crib or safe place with a music CD and some favorite toys.  Let him play alone for awhile.
  11. Put her in a jumper or bouncer and let her go to it.
  12. Carry her around in a baby carrier (Bjorn or otherwise) while you go about your day.
  13. Bring the baby from room to room while you are folding laundry or doing dishes.  Let her sit on a blanket on the floor and observe what you are doing or her surroundings.
  14. Visit the family pet.  Show the baby how to play with him/her.  How to be gentle.  Let the baby observe care chores and “help”.
  15. Let the baby watch “baby TV”… i.e.  a goldfish tank.
  16. Sing a song with her.  Especially songs with hand motions, like Itsy, Bitsy Spider.
  17. Rock quietly with her in a rocking chair.  Look out the window and see the world go by.
  18. Play piano with her.  A synthesizer is just as good for entertainment.  Small band toys are also fun… cymbals, drum, tambourine
  19. Learn and do a daily baby massage.  This doesn’t have to be very long or involved but will give you a chance for quiet time with him/her
  20. Let baby stand looking out a low window… She can use the window sill to cruise along.  Point out trees, birds, squirrels, etc.
  21. Talk to her.  Encourage her to tell you a “story.”
  22. Teach her to wave, shake hands, and clap.
  23. Listen to a foreign language tape.  Also available at the library.
  24. Play with puppets… make stuffed animals chat with each other and “play.”
  25. Make up games… Put your game here… Be inventive.  Try things you actually enjoy that are age appropriate.
